The Natural History Museum of Axioupolis is based in the old primary school of Axioupolis at short distance from the city centre. The museum, which is governed by the Society for Cultural and Tourist Development of Axioupolis is actively involved in the study of the natural environment and the preservation of the natural heritage of the area.
The idea for the establishment of the museum was first conceived in 1993. The following year, the project was integrated in the EU programme Leader I, which permitted restoration works to begin on the neoclassical building that once hosted the city’s old primary school, in order to accommodate the museum’s facilities. The first sections were accordingly organised in collaboration with the scientific teams of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of the city of Kavala (head: Th. Arabatzis) and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (head: G. Demopoulos).
The Natural History Museum was inaugurated in June 1997. In the years following, thanks to the support of the EU programme INTERREG II, its sections were enriched with the fauna collection attended by the scientific team of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of the city of Kavala.
Today, the museum continues its efforts to promote environmental education and sensitise its visitors on issues concerning the protection of the natural environment. Thanks to its participation in the EU programme INTERREG II and its collaboration with the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication, University of the Aegean, it successfully uses the new technologies and broadens its activities and its relation with the public. |
